Short
Course on Risk Management and Food Safety
November 3 - November 17, 2008
The McLaughlin Centre continued its leadership role in providing training
in population health risk assessment this November. The Centre organized
a two-week long course on Risk Management and Food Safety for Chinese
government officials on site in Huangshan and Beijing, China for more
than 100 participants. This initiative was sponsored by Agriculture
and Agri-Foods Canada.
During these two weeks, participants received training from Canadian
experts in the field of risk management including the Centre’s
own Director, Dr. Daniel Krewski as well as colleagues Dr. Michael
Tyshenko, Dr. Yue Chen and Angela Brazeau. Presentations covered various
aspects of risk management including theory and case study examples
focusing on food safety.
The goal of the two week course was to share Canadian expertise in
risk management using a broad context of public health and the environment
with a particular emphasis on food safety. The end goal of this course
was to help participants gain an overview of knowledge of the basic
concepts of risk management and practical training for improved risk
management. With a better understanding, participants can apply the
risk management techniques prospectively within their own government
departments, averting costly financial, health and social issues.
