The McLaughlin Centre plays a leadership role in providing training in population health risk assessment. This October, the Centre continued this work by organizing a three-week long course on Risk Management and Food Safety for 24 Chinese government officials who visited the capital from Beijing and surrounding area. The course was held on the main campus at the University of Ottawa and was sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and co-hosted by the department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. During these three weeks, delegates received expert training from Canadian government representatives and University of Ottawa professors including the Centre’s own Director, Dr. Daniel Krewski. Presentations covered diverse aspects of risk management with a particular emphasis on food safety. Along with in class lectures, participants were given the opportunity to visit key Canadian government departments such as the Public Health Agency of Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada along with other key organizations such as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. On November 2nd, 2007, participants successfully completed the course having gained valuable knowledge in the area of risk management. It is hoped that delegates will apply this knowledge retrospectively once back in their home country. For a complete agenda of the three week course, click here.
